Hello everyone, my name is Elaine. Today I want to share with you how beginners choose oil paintbrushes. Oil painting pens are divided into soft pens and hard pens, and the method of pen use is related to the degree of dilution of the pigments. Pig bristle pens for oil paintings are cheap and thick, suitable for painting dry paints and large surfaces and thick coatings; soft oil pens It is suitable for wolf hao pens and man-made fiber brushes. Oil painting hard pens are suitable for drawing local details, such as portraits of human faces, realistic still lifes, etc.; oil painting soft pens are suitable for painting imaginary parts of large areas, such as the background color of the distant sky, distant mountains, and the clothing materials of the characters.
1. Soft brush
When painting with soft brush, the picture can be expressed more delicately. Generally, soft brushes are often used in classical painting. Soft hair oil brushes mainly include: wolf hair brush, mink brush, cow hair and camel hair brush, chemical fiber brush. The best soft brush is made of mink hair. The elasticity and softness of the mink brush are the best among all the brushes made of soft hair. In the actual painting process, the coloring is soft and even, and there are no traces of brushstrokes. It is suitable for faces and details. In the depiction of the painting, the thickness of the paint on the picture is thin, and it can show a very delicate effect.
The wolf hair brush is made of weasel hair. The biggest disadvantage of the wolf hair brush is the lack of elasticity of the brush hair. Therefore, in actual use, the hand feel and the performance of the details of the picture are not as good as the mink brush, but the wolf hair brush has a great price compared to the mink hair brush. Advantages, the general price is less than half of the mink brush, so most beginners will choose this material.
Cow hair and camel hair oil paint brushes. This material is mostly used to make fan-shaped pens. Because the hair is soft, it is suitable for use in hood dyeing and is not recommended for beginners.
The chemical fiber pen is the man-made fiber pen. In theory, the chemical fiber pen should have the characteristics of high-grade oil paint brushes such as mink hair and badger hair. The softness and elasticity are good, and the artificial hair can be made into different shapes of brushes, which can be soft Partial colors can be portrayed in detail. However, in actual use, the chemical fiber pen does not achieve this, and the brush bristles are easily deformed. It is not recommended for beginners to use this pen.
2. Hard-bristled oil paint brush
Compared with soft-bristed brushes, hard-bristed brushes have the advantages of strong elasticity, sturdiness, strength, and high abrasion resistance. Hard-bristled oil paint brushes mainly include pig bristle brushes and badger hair brushes.
The bristle brush often leaves bristle marks when coloring, which can stir up thick pigments. It can be rubbed, rubbed, and brushed. Generally, the brush bristles will not stick together. But it is precisely because of these characteristics that the boar bristle brush will appear weak when expressing the delicate texture of the picture. On the contrary, the bristle brush is suitable for thick brush strokes and texture.
Compared with the bristle brush, the badger hair brush is more delicate, soft and elastic. It is a high-end bristle brush, and of course the price is higher. Therefore, it is recommended that beginners choose the material of boar bristle if they want to choose a hard-bristled brush.
For beginners, it is recommended to use hard pens. Only hard pens can express the crude oil painting style. The painting colors of hard pens are also richer than soft pens, and there are various types of bristles pens. Soft pens are only suitable for realistic painting styles. Due to the limitation of brush materials, soft pens are mainly small and medium-sized pens, especially Langhao only has small pens. In oil paintings, the relationship between the type of oil painting brush and its purpose is clearest. Large-scale oil painting brushes are usually used to create large brushstroke textures and spread large color blocks, while small-scale oil painting brushes are usually used to draw thin lines and color points. The types of oil painting brushes currently on the market are not uniform, and oil painting brushes of the same type of different brands and textures vary greatly. And the model division is different, there are 0-24, 0-12, 0-16 and so on. Hard oil painting brushes such as bristles have a complete range of sizes and models. Soft oil painting brushes such as mink hair generally do not have large pens, while fan-shaped oil painting brushes (mostly mane or artificial hair) do not have small ones.
Next, we will introduce the functions of different materials and shapes of paintbrushes:
①Bristles oil painting brushes: mostly pig bristles, with strong elasticity, sturdiness and strength. Coloring often leaves bristles marks, which can provoke thick pigments. It can be rubbed, rubbed, and brushed. Generally, the brush bristles will not stick together. It is mostly used for thick paintings with brushstroke texture.
②Mink or badger hair oil painting brush: It is a high-grade oil painting brush, moderately soft and hard, soft and even in coloring, without traces of brushstrokes, suitable for detailed depiction of the picture. Squirrel hair and monkey hair oil painting brushes are also soft hair brushes. Cow hair and camel hair brushes: They are soft-haired oil pating brushes and are mostly used for overpainting.
③Artificial hair oil painting brush: It has the characteristics of high-grade oil painting brushes such as mink hair and badger hair. Artificial hair can make oil painting brushes of different shapes, which can soften partial colors and carry out detailed depictions. However, it cannot be soaked in water, and its hair is easily deformed in water.
Shape and function:
①Round oil painting brush: the oldest type of oil painting brush. It has a blunt nib, which can be used to make smoother and softer strokes; the small round oil painting brush can be used to hook the line, the side can be used to produce a large area of fuzzy color halo, and it can also be used for stippling techniques.
②Flat-head oil painting brushes: Flat-headed oil painting brushes did not appear until the 19th century. It is used to make wide, sweeping brush strokes; you can draw rough lines on the side of the flat head; rotating the pen body to use the drag sweeping pen, you can have uneven strokes.
③Hazel-shaped oil painting brush: flat round head, also called “cat tongue pen”. It has the characteristics of both round and flat oil painting brushes, but it is difficult to control. When expressing curvilinear brushstrokes, it is a more elegant and smooth oil painting brush.
④Fan-shaped oil painting brush: It is a new type of special oil painting brush with sparse brush hair and a flat fan shape. Used for swiping and brushing in wet painting, or to soften overly distinct contours. Painters who like thin painting often use this kind of oil painting brush. When using the fan-shaped pen to rub colors, you must keep it clean, otherwise it will hinder its dexterity.
